Turkey shoot, September 23, 2012 - Photos

The weather was great for our annual Fall Turkey Shoot. Most of the participants expressed that they were having a good time and were surprised at the low turnout on such a great day. For the record, 22 people attended the shoot, they shot about 13 rounds. We had, the .22 off hand at 25 yds, the luck shoot at 25 yds, pistol at 25 yds, shotgun slug at 50 yds, turkey head at about 35 yds and high power rifle at 100 yds. For lunch we had hamburgers, hot dogs, soda and chips for a nominal fee. If you missed it this year it maybe your last chance as we need a new chairmen and a larger commitment and support from our members.

Thanks to Pete Sarr for working so hard to keep it going these many years.

Black Powder Woods Walk September 9, 2012

The most unique event run at MSC the last few years are the Black Powder (BP) Woods Walks. Most of the shooting events at MSC involve paper targets on the rage but not Rich's BP woods walk. The woods walks involve a number of special and difficult targets including chains, metal plates, charcoal brickets, splitting playing cards, eggs and more. The targets are set up in the woods behind the clubhouse and require you take a walk in the woods, hence the name Woods Walk. Two groups of shooters navigated the path with various degrees of successful shots but all would agree it was a great challenge and fun time.

One of the really great things about Black Powder shooting at MSC is how helpful the other shooters are at getting one started. I for one had never even held one until a few years ago but was told if I showed up Rich would have an extra one or two BP guns to try out. Since then I know he has helped a few more of us get involved and shooting BP.

Fifth Annual Scarawan Cup - Photos

The Fifth annual Scarawan Cup was hosted by Marbletown Sportsmen's Club March 31, 2012. Despite some “crazy” weather all in attendance seemed to have a great time. March most certainly did not come in like a Lion nor leave like a Lamb. We had numerous days in the upper 60’s and low 70’s throughout the month making it look like this years event would be perfect. However the morning of the event the lion showed up, it snowed and once again we found ourselves with a wet, cold, day to have our match. In true sportsmen fashion the weather did not deter the clubs from making it another successful event.

By 9:00 AM it was misting and snowing at the same time and nobody from Vly had arrived but by 9:30 we had good crowd of smiling, jovial sportsmen ready to start shooting. We had our safety briefing and rules review at 10 and got the match underway. 25 shooters signed up, 15 from Marbletown, and 10 from Vly to shoot 3 relays for top scores. The top five from each club would shoot one last relay, head to head, to determine the club that would get the cup this year. Joe Montalbano and Paul Brasky shared the scoring responsibilities and kept things running smoothly. Even with a few “amusing” scoring issues that required some re-shoots we got through all the relays in short order. MSC was the winner of this years match by a score of 228 to 205. This year we also saw the cups first perfect score when Tom Kramek scored a 50 in the deciding match.

A big thank you to Tom Kramek in organizing & running the event, and to Ernie for being our RSO on site. Thank you to Steve Schneider and the crew helping him in the kitchen. The food was very good, as usual.
